The Washington D.C.-based band Bluebrain are the first to create a site-specific album that responds directly to listener location. Taking cues from The National Mall in downtown D.C., the album syncs songs and melodies to a listener’s location as they travel to various zones within the Mall.

The album will be delivered as an iPhone app and works by tracking a users location via the phone’s built-in GPS feature. Hundreds of zones within the Mall are tagged, and the sound plays according to where the listener is located in proximity to them. The zones overlap presenting standalone melodies, rhythms, instrumentation and pace specifically designed for each.

Separated from cultural and historical reference, the album pushes the boundaries of deconstruction not only in song but in the way a very album can be produced and presented.

The National Mall is the first in a series. Upcoming works include audio designs for Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York, and a piece that will stretch the entire length of California’s Highway 1.

What’s so good?

Glasser, a.k.a. Cameron Mesirow, is relatively new to the scene — her debut EP Apply came out only last year — but her music sounds much more developed than most artists typically do at this point in their career. Her album, a piece of music way larger than the sum of its parts, incorporates intricate arrangements, brooding synths, and sophisticated vocals, weaving a story larger than any individual single can tell.

For a taste, visit the opening track “Apply.” You’ll hear an echoing, percussive stomp juxtaposed against floating and ethereal vocals. At many moments, like on the tune “Mirrorage,” all the layers become stripped away and slowly build, with the emphasis placed on her voice as she sings about love and lost trust.

Ring, out now on True Panther Sounds, is right up there with other must-haves of the season in that dark, witchy vein like oOoOO, Deerhunter, Warpaint, and Salem. She’s is on tour now, playing a few dates at CMJ before heading west.

This one takes us in a totally different direction than the last few did. Lately, I’ve felt inspired by the recent crop of seemingly zeitgeist-nailing bands with that darker, multi-dimensional and somewhat wistful sound. It feels totally perfect for the changing seasons and for the general transition into fall (think witchy: Deerhunter, oOoOO, Salem, Warpaint, Glasser).

While it’s easy to do the buzz band thang, I wanted to add my own style, you know – shake it up with some rock, hip hop, electro, and bits of cheddah tossed in in for fun.

This season inspires me. I hope to maybe pass some inspiration your way, too.
